Navy spoils Campbell's season opener 21-2
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – Maddy Dolinar scored twice Saturday as No. 18 Navy defeated Campbell 21-2 in the Camels' season opener.
The Mids opened the game with five straight goals in the first eight minutes, the first coming from Aimee Gennaro in the 23rd second.
Dolinar, a freshman, broke the streak with CU's first goal off a free position attempt with 22:23 left in the first half.
The Camels were held without a goal for the remainder of the half, which ended 14-1 in favor of Navy.
Dolinar's shot was the only one of the first half for CU, which won four draw controls and picked up nine ground balls in the period.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Kincer stopped five of 25 Navy shots on goal during her 30 minutes in the cage.
The Mids kept up the pace after halftime, putting seven straight in the CU goal, widening Navy's margin to 21-1.
Dolinar put her second goal past Navy keeper Annie Foky off an assist from sophomore Erica Hitch with 6:27 left in the game. The goal was the final for either team, as the game ended 21-2 in favor of the Mids.
For Navy, Loren Generi and Jill Coughlin each totaled five goals, and Generi added six assists. As a team, the Mids tool 37 total shots and won 18 draw controls.
Campbell ended the day with four shots and seven draw controls.
Freshman keeper Merredith Bechler, who entered the game after halftime, registered three saves on 12 Mid shots.
The Camels will continue their road trip Sunday as they take on American University at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Georgetown University's Multi-Sport Field due to this week's snow storm.
