Winthrop Tops Campbell 15-10
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop snapped Campbell's four-game win streak Saturday at Eagle Field in a 15-10 Big South match. The Camels move to 5-3 on the season and fall to 0-2 in the conference.
"We are disappointed with the outcome," head coach Phil Schuman said. "We had too many self-inflicted wounds to overcome in order to get a victory today. This is a good teaching moment for our young squad."
Campbell scored five times in each half for a total of 10. With just under two minutes to go in the first half, junior Cloey Henchcliffe scored her second goal of the day to tie the game at five, the only time Campbell erased the Winthrop lead. The Eagles scored three times in just over a minute to push the score to 8-5 before halftime.
Coming out of the break, freshman Erica Hitch notched her second of four goals of the day to cut Winthrop's lead to two, 8-6.
The Eagles scored five-straight goals before junior Taelar Errington ended the Camels' nine-minute scoring drought with her first goal of the day and her 18th of the season, bringing the score to 15-8 in favor of Winthrop.
Including Errington's goal, CU netted the final three scores of the match. Freshman Kaki Armiger and Hitch notched the final two goals with six minutes left in the game. Armiger's was her only goal of the day while Hitch's was her fourth, making the final score 15-10.
Goalkeeper Brittany Kincer had 13 saves and kept Winthrop scoreless in the last nine minutes of the game. She has 64 total saves for the season and owns a .460 save percentage.
The Camels continue their Big South slate at Liberty Monday in a 3 p.m. match in Lynchburg, Va.
