Late-Game Heroics Give Campbell 8-7 Win over St. Francis
LORETTO, PA. – Campbell scored twice in the final two minutes, coming from behind to defeat St. Francis 8-7 at DeGol Field Thursday. Freshman Loren Day scored the final two goals, each on assists from classmate Erica Hitch, to clinch the victory as the Camels move to 3-2 on the year.
After leading 4-1 at halftime, Campbell surrendered six goals in the second half. The Camels held the lead for 48 minutes before St. Francis tied the score at six with just under six minutes to play.
"I think we grew up a lot tonight," head coach Phil Schuman said. "Credit St. Francis for a great comeback and snagging a one goal lead that late in the game. Our young squad made a decision to refuse to lose."
Day's final two goals came only 14 seconds apart. With 1:54 to go, Hitch set up Day for the tying score, Day's 13th goal of the season. Hitch then collected the ensuing draw control and passed to Day once more, who netted the go-ahead goal at the 1:40 mark.
With 14 seconds to go, junior goalkeeper Brittany Kincer stopped two Red Flash shots, securing the win for the Camels.
For CU, Hitch notched three goals, all in the first half, to accompany her two assists. Day finished the game with three goals off of four shots on goal. Junior Taelar Errington and freshman Kaki Armiger tacked on one goal each.
As a team, Campbell scored its eight goals on 11 shots on-goal with four assists. On the defensive side of the ball, the team picked up 14 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.
Hitch and Day each have 14 goals on the season, one behind Henchcliffe. Day leads all Camels with 20 points this year.
"To be 3-2 at this point in the season, with 12 healthy players, is a great feeling," Schuman continued. "We will enjoy it for tonight and start prepping for Detroit tomorrow."
The Camels are back in action Saturday as they take on Detroit at noon on Titan Field.
