FARMVILLE, VA. – A five-run fifth inning for Longwood lifted the Lancers past Campbell Thursday afternoon in Farmville, Va.
Karleigh Donovan and Kaylynn Batten posted 2-for-3, two run performances to lead the Lancers offense.
Bailey Bjorson posted the lone multi-hit day for CU, going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs for the Orange and Black. Six other Camels notched hits on the day, including Amber Schisler's 1-for-1 outing, as she was intentionally walked twice in the contest.
With a 3-3 score after four innings, Longwood sent nine batters to the plate as it claimed an 8-3 lead. Batten began the scoring with a RBI double and two batters later scored on Donovan's RBI single.
With the bases loaded, Jessica Smith reached on a fielding error to score one. Kasey Carr finished the scoring with a two-RBI single.
CU added one in the bottom half of the inning on Bjorson's RBI single to left field that scored Caroline Smith and cut the deficit to four, 8-4. The Camels put two on in the sixth but they were unable to close the gap.
Longwood opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Glenn Walters. Donovan's two-run home run in the third increase Longwood's lead to 3-0.
Campbell put three on the board in the third inning to even the score at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Megan Mozingo plated a pair of runners on her infield single. One batter later, Bjorson's RBI single to right field scored Abby Perryman from second.
Elizabeth McCarthy picked up the win in 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Katie Baker (15-10) took the loss in 4.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs and six hits.
Campbell will take on the winner of the Charleston Southern vs. Winthrop game that is scheduled for Thursday evening.
