Schaefer, Werner earn CoSIDA Academic All-District awards

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Campbell men's tennis has earned two Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday afternoon. Germany natives Lukas Schaefer and Dustin Werner were each named to the District 3 Division I At-Large First Team for their efforts in the classroom.

Schaefer, a member of the 2016 Big South All-Academic Team, boasts a 3.885 GPA with a major in Economics. The junior from Duisburg, Germany notched a 13-8 singles record during the 2017 season, including Campbell's only nationally ranked win as he defeated No. 118 Henry Patten of UNC Asheville in the Big South Semifinals, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0. Pairing up with Nicolas Rakitin in doubles for a majority of the season, the duo finished the year with a 9-5 record in dual match play.

Werner, who owns a perfect 4.0 GPA in International Business, adds another award to his breakout sophomore campaign. The Reutlingen, Germany native was named First Team All-Conference in singles and doubles and was selected to the Big South All-Academic Team following the end of the 2017 regular season. He finished the season with a 15-6 singles record, including a 6-1 mark in conference play. In doubles, Werner and compatriot Lorenz Schwab ended the regular season with six-straight wins on their way to a 12-9 record overall.

Schaefer and Werner are the first CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees in Campbell men's tennis history. The award was voted on by CoSIDA members from Division I institutions in District 3, which includes the states of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Campbell was the only school from the district to have multiple student-athletes honored.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month. A full list of all Men's At Large Academic All-District honorees can be found here.
