Camels down Highlanders 4-2, advance to Big South semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels picked up a Big South quarterfinal victory over the Radford Highlanders, 4-2, Wednesday night at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Complex. CU has now amassed 19 wins this season to tie its second-highest win total in program history.

Campbell (19-4, 5-2 BSC) began the match with doubles play as the German duo of Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner earned their seventh-straight win, defeating Caldwell/Varga on court one, 6-2. The doubles point was clinched at No. 3 doubles by Jonathan O'Neal and Gerard Sola, who picked up their 17th win of the season by a score of 6-4. Nicolas Rakitin and Lukas Schaefer paired up on court two for the first time since March 10, but their match went unfinished after the doubles point was decided.

Radford tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court five as O'Neal fell to the Highlanders' winningest player, Janken Thoen. Werner earned the first singles win of the day for CU by a score of 7-5, 6-1 over Alexandros Caldwell, good for his seventh victory over a conference opponent this season. The Highlanders answered that with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles to tie the match, 2-2.

Campbell freshman Fernando Clemente picked up his team-leading 17th singles win of the spring, defeating Matko Varga on court six, 6-4, 6-2. Minutes later, the match was clinched on court three, where Rakitin held off a good fight in the second set from Samuel Taylor to win the flight, 6-1, 7-5. Sola was leading in his match, 6-3, 4-4 before the match was clinched.
