Butler named Scholar-Athlete of the Year; Four Camels named All-Big South

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Drew Butler has been named the Big South Conference's Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year, headlining four all-conference selections for Campbell.

Butler was also named Second Team All-Big South utility. Cole Hallum was also named First Team All-Big South at designated hitter, while Matthew Barefoot and Jeff Hahs took Second Team honors in the outfield.

Butler, currently tied for the nation's lead in stolen bases with 38, bats .318 with 51 runs scored and 33 RBI. Earlier this season, senior was named CoSIDA Academic All-District, and was one of 30 candidates nationally for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award. Butler leads the Big South in stolen bases, ranking second in runs, third in hits, fourth in on-base percentage, eighth in batting and ninth in walks, starting games at four different positions in the field, including outfield (27), third base (9), catcher (9) and second base (7). He is the first Camel to be named Big South Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Hallum collected First Team All-Big South honors for the second time in his career, posting a .287 average with 50 RBI and 27 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs. The 2015 Big South Player of the Year, Hallum was again among the Big South's leaders in several categories in 2017, including second in RBI, doubles and sacrifice flies, standing third in slugging and on-base percentage, fourth in home runs, eighth in total bases, eighth in walks and tied for first in times hit by pitch.

Barefoot, a redshirt freshman, finished the regular season with a .339 average, 22 doubles, eight homers and 48 RBI. He was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week three times, also collecting one conference Player of the Week honor. The rookie leads the Big South in hits, doubles, total bases and sacrifice flies, ranking sixth in batting.

Hahs batted .310 for the Camels, posting 41 RBI, 43 runs scored and 10 home runs, with nine long balls coming in Big South games, homering in six of CU's eight Big South series. The junior from O'Fallon, Ill. ranks second in the Big South in sacrifice flies, sixth in on-base percentage, seventh in slugging, seventh in runs and 10th in total.

Joining Butler as major award recipients were Liberty's D.J. Artis, named the Big South Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year Zack Ridgely of Radford, Freshman of the Year Colton Rendon of Winthrop and Head Coach of the Year Tom Riginos from Winthrop.

Campbell will match up with regular season champion Winthrop to open the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship, presented by Hardee's, Tuesday, May 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C.
