Baseball begins Big South Championship play Tuesday with Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Eighth-seeded Campbell opens up play in the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship Tuesday, May 23 against regular season league champion Winthrop. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C.

Campbell (25-20, 10-14 Big South) closed the season with a series win over Longwood. The Eagles (31-22, 17-7 Big South) took the tournament's top seed with a series win over Radford.

The Eagles took the season series 2-1 in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop held on for a 7-5 win in the series opener before Campbell evened the set with an 11-5 victory. WU claimed the finale 3-2.

The teams will be meeting for the fourth time in the Big South tournament in the last four years. Campbell defeated Winthrop in the 2014 Big South Championship game in Rock Hill, S.C. to claim the title. The Eagles defeated CU twice in the 2015 tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Matthew Barefoot leads the Camels with a .339 average, posting 48 RBI and 30 extra-base hits, including a Big South best 22 doubles. Drew Butler adds a .318 average with 51 runs scored and 38 stolen bases, while Jeff Hahs bats .310 with 41 RBI and 10 home runs. Cole Hallum also hits .287 with 50 RBI and 27 extra-base hits, including 10 homers.

Right-hander Wes Noble leads the Camels on the mound, holding a 4-2 record with a 3.58 ERA in 55 1/3 innings. Alex Yarem is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA, while Harry Thomas is 2-2 with a 3.91 ERA.

Anthony Paulsen tops Winthrop with a .347 clip, adding 25 RBI, while Hunter Lipscomb owns a team-best 48 with a .282 average. Nate Pawelczyk is 7-2 with a 2.30 ERA, while Colton Rendon is 7-3 with a 3.07 ERA.
