BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell travels to Big South leader Winthrop for a pivotal three game series, May 12-14.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. The series continues Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Friday's opener was originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, but was moved to avoid inclement weather.
At 27-19 overall and 13-5 in conference play, The Eagles lead the Big South heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Campbell sits at 22-26 overall and 7-11 in Big South games, currently at No. 9 in the standings.
CU is coming off a 15-4 Wednesday night win at North Carolina Central. Eight Camels drove in and scored runs in the win. Campbell's 15 runs matched a season high (at Virginia Tech, March 28, W 15-8). Campbell's eight runs in the second inning were a season-best, and the most since posting eight in a 15-3 win over North Carolina A&T on March 20, 2016.
Matthew Barefoot leads the Camels on the season, batting .361 with 45 RBI on 30 extra-base hits, including 22 doubles and eight home runs. The Dunn, N.C. native was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week on Monday, batting .600 (9-for-15) with a home run, four doubles and four runs, picking up a hit in all four Campbell games.
Jeff Hahs adds a .329 average with nine home runs and 38 RBI, while Cole Hallum hits .287 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI. Drew Butler remains the nation's leader in stolen bases with 34, adding a .282 average with 47 runs scored.
Winthrop heads into the Big South series after a midweek nonconference split with Wofford (W 4-3) and Davidson (L 7-6). The Eagles have won five straight Big South games, including a home sweep over Gardner-Webb last weekend.
Anthony Paulsen leads the Eagles with a .349 average, adding 24 RBI and five home runs. Mitch Spires adds a .345 clip, while Hunter Lipscomb has driven in a team-best 39. Nate Pawelczyk is 7-1 with a 1.95 ERA.
The Camels and Eagles will be meeting for the first time since squaring off twice in the 2015 Big South Tournament. The series will be the first regular season meeting between the two since 2012. Campbell leads the all-time series 23-21.
Campbell heads to East Carolina on May 16 for its final midweek contest. The Camels close out the regular season hosting Longwood May 18-20 at Jim Perry Stadium.
