LYNCHBURG, VA. – Zach Clinton and Eric Grabowski combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, helping Liberty hold on to a 4-3 win over Campbell in Friday's Big South series opener.
After Campbell (20-24, 6-10 Big South) scattered nine hits off Liberty (27-16, 13-6 Big South) starter Garret Price in 5 2/3, Clinton and Grabowski limited the Camels to just one hit, walking one and hitting two. The pair struck out two apiece.
Price (4-1) picked up the win for Liberty, working 5 2/3 innings with three runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking four. Grabowski earned the save, his first of the season.
Allan Winans (3-5) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Harry Thomas pitched two scoreless, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and two walks for the Camels.
Matthew Barefoot gave Campbell the early 2-0 lead with none out in the top of the first, launching a 1-0 pitch to left for his eighth homer of the season after Drew Butler led off the game with a four pitch walk.
In the bottom of the third, Cam Locklear put Liberty on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Eric Grabowski, who led off the inning with a triple. Jack Morris followed with a RBI double, scoring on a Campbell error to give the Flames a 3-2 lead.
Liberty added a run in the third with Andrew Kowalo drawing a bases loaded walk.
Butler brought Campbell within a run in the sixth with a two out RBI single, scoring Kevin Barron, who led off the inning with a base hit. From there, Zach Clinton and Eric Grabowski allowed just one Campbell hit, a Jeff Hahs leadoff single in the ninth.
Barefoot led the Camels at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, adding his first inning home run. Hahs was 2-for-5, while Barron went 2-for-3 with a double for Campbell.
Trey McDyre was 2-for-5 with a run for the Flames. Morris also went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run in the win.
The series continues Saturday at 6 p.m., concluding Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Camels head to Duke (Tuesday, May 9) and North Carolina Central (Wednesday, May 10) next week. CU has one home series remaining, wrapping up the regular season May 18-20 against Longwood.
