BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Joe Gruszka drove in three and UNC Asheville defeated Campbell 10-5 in its Big South series opener Friday at Jim Perry Stadium.
Asheville moved to 16-22 overall and 6-7 in Big South play with the win, while Campbell fell to 17-21 on the season and 5-8 in conference games.
With a 5-5 game in the top of the seventh, Kyle Carruthers tripled in the go-ahead run and Gruszka followed with a RBI single for the Bulldogs.
Asheville tacked on three in the top of the ninth, including a two run double down the left field line from Gruszka to make it 10-5.
Campbell left 12 on base in the loss, including the bases loaded in the sixth, and two on in the second, eighth and ninth.
Brandon Harris (4-3) picked up the win in relief, pitching 2/3 of an inning scoreless with a walk. Asheville starter Greg Gasparro allowed four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Justin Woods earned the save, his fifth of the season, allowing just a hit with a strikeout over 1 2/3 scoreless.
Harry Thomas (2-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. CU starter Andrew Witczak went 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Campbell pitching issued 11 walks in the loss.
Joe Tietjen and Justin Woods also knocked in two, all in a five run third inning for the Bulldogs. Danny Wilson was 2-for-3, scoring three runs.
The series resumes Saturday at noon. Originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, the start time was pushed up to avoid inclement weather. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m.
The Camels will host UNCW on Tuesday, April 25 before heading to North Carolina on Wednesday, April 26.
