This week Campbell’s softball team (21-24, 6-6 Big South Conference) plays five games at home at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Camels start the week with a non-conference doubleheader against UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, April 18, starting at 4 p.m. CU will then get back into league play and hosts Coastal Carolina for three games over the weekend starting on Friday, April 20, at 4 p.m.

Matt Sergey tossed a five-hit complete game shutout on Friday night as Campbell defeated Winthrop 8-0 at the Winthrop Ballpark in CU’s return to the Big South Conference. The Fighting Camels (21-3, 1-0 BSC) win a 16th-consecutive game, while Winthrop drops to 6-17 overall, 0-1 in league play.

This is her first time being honor by the league and the first time a Campbell softball player has ever earned weekly distinction from the Big South Conference. This is Campbell’s first season in the Big South Conference since 1994 and the league office did not hand out weekly softball awards until 1995.

Softball Sweeps Two On Final Day of Camel Stampede
Campbell’s softball team (15-15) finished the Camel Stampede with a flourish in taking games from Drexel (9-11) and North Carolina Central (1-26) on the final day of the tournament on Saturday, March 17, at the Eakes Athletic Complex. CU defeated Drexel 6-1 in the first game of the day and held off North Carolina Central for a 5-2 victory in the second game. The Camels ended up with a 3-1 record in the tournament, but held the run differential in the head to head meetings with Drexel to earn the tournament title.

Softball Splits Games On Second Day of Lipton Invitational
Senior Taylor McGee provided the late game heroics for Campbell’s softball team (9-10) with her two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give CU a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan (3-10) in the team’s first game of the day at the Lipton Invitational. The Camels lost the night cap, 3-2, to Tennessee State (6-7) despite outhitting the Tigers 6 to 4.

Campbell’s softball team (7-8) is making a trip down to Gainesville, Fla. this weekend to spend the start of CU’s Spring Break playing in the Lipton Invitational from March 2-4. The Camels are slated to take Tennessee State and Eastern Michigan twice plus a game with No. 3/4 Florida. CU starts the tournament with its contest against Tennessee State at 9 a.m. on March 2. CU then takes on Eastern Michigan at 11:15 a.m. that morning. The Camels take on the same two teams in the opposite order on March 3 at 4:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Campbell completes the tournament with the marquee match-up with No. 3/4 Florida at 1:30 p.m. on March 4.

Longwood University set to join Big South Conference on July 1, 2012
Big South Conference officials announced today that Longwood University will become the League's 12th member as of July 1, 2012. Longwood has competed as a NCAA Division I Independent since 2007. Longwood was invited to join the conference following a vote by the Big South Council of Chief Executive Officers. Longwood's addition increases the Big South membership to 12 institutions for the first time in League history.
